Failure to Yield

One of the most commonly disregarded and misunderstood traffic signs are “yield” signs. Typically these signs exist when two roads are merging together, or whenever a car is turning left without an arrow. When a driver fails to yield the right-of-way to other cars, they may cause an accident, resulting in serious injuries or even death.

If you or someone you know has been involved in an automobile accident when another driver failed to yield the right-of-way, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your losses. Contact the New York City failure to yield attorneys of Parker Waichman Alonso, LLP. Call 1-888-244-2273 today to schedule a free initial consultation and discuss your legal options.

When to Yield

Various traffic scenarios require a driver to yield the right-of-way in order to avoid collision. Some such scenarios include:

  • Turning left at an intersection with a green light, but no arrow. Many people, especially beginning drivers, are unaware that they must yield to oncoming traffic, which also has a green light.
  • When merging on or off the highway, drivers must yield the right of way to the faster moving vehicles. For example, when exiting the highway, cars on the service road must yield the right-of-way to exiting vehicles that are merging onto the service road. Conversely, when entering the highway, drivers must yield to cars that are already on the highway.
  • Some intersections have a right lane that enables vehicles to curve right and join traffic running perpendicular to them. In these cases, the merging traffic must yield the right of way to vehicles already moving in that direction.

Failure to yield the right-of-way when necessary can compromise driver safety.
