A pregnant 23-year-old woman from New York City was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon when the car she was riding in struck a wall on Route 9W.
The car was carrying five people, including the woman’s husband, their two-year-old child, her sister, and her brother-in-law. The brother-in-law was driving the car at the time of the accident. Police believe that the car hydro-planed on the wet pavement, as it was raining at the time of the accident.
No one else in the vehicle was injured.
The woman was identified as a pre-school teacher in Brooklyn.

A former NYPD officer has pleaded guilty to charges of second degree manslaughter for driving while intoxicated and hitting and killing a woman in 2009.
The officer is expected to serve 90 days in jail as a result for the DUI conviction, as opposed to the 7 years he faced before.
Around 1 AM on Sept. 27, 2009, the officer struck and killed a 32-year-old woman as she was leaving a wedding reception in the Mill Basin neighborhood. He was reportedly off-duty at the time of the accident.
Following the incident, the officer refused to submit to a blood alcohol test. After a subpoena was obtained for the test several hours later, he tested clean. There have been questions raised as to whether or not other officers helped him change the results.
His guilty plea on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, has been enough to satisfy the victim’s family. The woman’s father stated, “All I needed was for him to take responsibility, and he took responsibility.”
The officer will also be required to install an ignition lock on his car, complete an alcohol treatment program, and serve five years of probation. He has resigned from the NYPD.

Last night, a woman was killed and two others were suffered serious injuries in a two-car accident on Saw Mill River Parkway. The accident occurred around 8:30 PM when a Honda SUV driven by a 65-year old Somers woman made an illegal left turn. The woman turned left onto Grant Street and collided head-on with a Lexus traveling northbound. The 31-year old New York City man driving the Lexus only suffered minor injuries in the accident and was not taken to a hospital.
The 65-year old driver of the Honda was the least seriously injured woman in her vehicle. Her condition was not released but authorities believe her injuries were not life-threatening. A 78-year old woman from Yonkers in the vehicle died after being transported to the hospital for serious injuries. Two other women in the vehicle, a 76-year old woman from Pleasantville and a 75-year old from Yonkers, were taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where they are in critical condition.

Police say a man lost control of his car Friday afternoon, spinning before crossing into oncoming traffic and hitting another car head-on.
The driver, 27-year-old Robin Straley, was dead on the scene, according to WBNG. WBNG reports that, he “was headed east on County Route 23,” at the time of the crash. Straley’s passenger, 20-year-old Samantha Decutler, was seriously injured and taken to the hospital, where she remains.
The other car’s driver, 66-year-old Sarah Mott, was taken to the hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries before her release.
The investigation is still being conducted, but police are saying that they believe speeding played a role in the accident.

An 80-year-old woman was killed in a car accident last Friday. According to police reports, the accident occurred on Route 17 in Ridgewood.
The accident allegedly was caused by a man who was driving under the influence. The man was driving down Route 16 when he crashed into the vehicle driven by the woman who was killed in the accident. When medical officials arrived, the woman was taken to The Valley Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Four people were injured in a car accident Friday. According to police reports, the accident occurred on the New York State Thruway near Buffalo.
The car apparently was trying to switch lanes when it got stuck under the rear of a truck. When medical officials arrived to the scene, one person was airlifted and three people were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals.

According to authorities, a man was seriously injured in a boat crash Tuesday when his boat smashed into a stone pier on a lake in the eastern Adirondacks.
The 52-year-old driver of the boat is believed to have been drinking at the time of the crash. Warrent County sheriff’s deputies say the 21-foot motor boat struck a pier late Tuesday night in the town of Hague, about 75 miles north of Albany.
Police say the man suffered severe head and neck injuries, and he was taken to a hospital in Ticoderoga and then transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Vermont.

New Yorkers have been presented a wealth of statistical information by the ambitious traffic study that the Bloomberg administration released last week.
The 50-page-report repudiated some of the most commonly held beliefs about traffic accidents in the city, showing that yellow taxis, trucks, and buses are involved in far fewer pedestrian accidents than private vehicles. In addition to that, jaywalkers accounted for fewer pedestrian accidents than those who obeyed the traffic laws and wait for the ‘walk’ sign.
New York officials plan to re-engineer intersections and reduce neighborhood speed limits as a result of these data.
The study examined more than 7,000 crashes that occurred in the five boroughs between 2002 and 2006 that involved the severe injury or death of a pedestrian.
Other interesting points of data include the fact that:
*Residents 65 and older make up 12 percent of the city’s population but account for 38 percent of pedestrian deaths.
*Elderly Asian-American drivers had a fatality rate about twice the average of all other elderly drivers, likely due to the fact that they “tend to be clustered in high-density, high traffic neighborhoods with genreally acknowledged pedestrian safety challenges.”
*Motorcyclists were killed at a rate 18 times that of occupants of enclosed motor vehicles
