Ohio truck driver pleads guilty to manslaughter

Posted on May 26th, 2010 No Comments

An Ohio truck driver pleaded guilty this week to manslaughter for a December 12 truck accident that killed a woman on the New York State Thruway.

The driver was streaming pornography on his laptop prior to the crash, which occurred about 20 miles east of Buffalo. He was also sleep deprived at the time, according to authorities.

The woman had just hit a deer and was pulled over on the side of the highway when the tractor-trailer struck her car. She was killed instantly.

The 45-year-old trucker will be sentenced in September and faces prison time ranging from five to fifteen years.

Staten Island woman sues city and police officer for injuries

Posted on May 7th, 2010 No Comments

A Staten Island woman filed a lawsuit against the city this week, alleging that a NYPD officer ran a red light, striking her car and leaving her with serious neck injuries.

The accident allegedly happened 9 a.m. January 21, when the woman was driving her 2003 Hyundai to work. Court documents state that she was making a left turn onto Signs Road from Richmond Avenue when the officer’s police cruiser, heading toward the Staten Island Mall on Richmond, plowed into her vehicle.

Court papers say that the woman had the right of way with a green turning arrow and the officer negligently ran a red light. Although the woman claims a fractured neck and serious neck injuries, she admits that she has not seen a physician.

She is suing for an undisclosed amount, including $20,000 for damages to her car. A city Law Department spokeswoman said Wednesday that although the city has not yet received the papers, once it does the city’s attorneys will be closely reading the suit.
