What is a statute of limitations?

A statute of limitations is the amount of time a person is legally allowed to file a legal claim after an injury causing accident. For example, personal injury claims are allotted a three year statute of limitations in New York. This means that following an accident, the victim has 3 years to file a claim. If they attempt to file after the statute of limitations has expired, their claim will be denied.
