Officials have said that the incident was an accident and that the driver has not been charged with any criminal charges.The woman was rushed to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead after suffering severe head trauma.

Bicycling advocates in the area are working to push the importance of bike safety such as wearing the appropriate gear while riding. The city is also working to get a system of bike lanes on the roadways in order to protect bikers by allowing them their own lane away from cars.

*Motorcyclists were killed at a rate 18 times that of occupants of enclosed motor vehicles

The 65-year old driver of the Honda was the least seriously injured woman in her vehicle.  Her condition was not released but authorities believe her injuries were not life-threatening.  A 78-year old woman from Yonkers in the vehicle died after being transported to the hospital for serious injuries.  Two other women in the vehicle, a 76-year old woman from Pleasantville and a 75-year old from Yonkers, were taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where they are in critical condition.

32-year old Carmen Huertas admitted that she had been drinking at a relative’s birthday party before picking up the girls to take them to her home in the Bronx for a sleepover.  After the accident, police registered Huertas’ BAC at .132 percent and determined that she was driving 18 miles per hour over the speed limit.

New York State developed a new law, named Leandra’s Law, in memorial of the 11-year old Leandra Rosado who was killed in the car crash.  Leandra’s Law makes drunk driving with children in the car a felony crime.

According to USA Today, “Doctors saved Jones left foot in an hours-long surgery after he crashed his car in New Orleans.” He was then transported to a New York Hospital.

According to officials with the New York State Police, 19 year-old Richard Carlston was traveling east on the Thruway Tuesday afternoon when he lost control of his vehicle while changing lanes. State Police Sergeant Robert Simon said the vehicle overturned and Carleston was ejected.

Carlston was transported by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital following the crash. He was pronounced dead early Thursday morning.

A passenger in Carlston’s vehicle, 19 year-old Justin Wolf, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was not injured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police say speed was not a factor.
