New law requires drunk drivers to use ignition interlock devices

Posted on July 29th, 2010 No Comments

On August 15th, as a part of  ”Leandra’s Law”, drunk drivers will be required to install ignition interlock breathalyzer devices in their vehicle.  Approximately 25,000 people are convicted of drunk driving in New York a year.

The devices will test to make sure a driver’s blood alcohol content is below .025 percent before starting the car.  If the device registers the driver’s BAC as higher than the legal limit of .08 they will face criminal charges.  In addition to installing the devices, convicted drunk drivers will be required to report to a specified location once a month to go over the results of the breathalyzer tests.

If you or someone you love has been the victim of drunk driving, contact the New York City drunk driving injury victim lawyers of Parker Waichman Alonso LLP at 1-888-244-2273 to learn more about your rights.
