After studying over 7,000 pedestrian accidents in New York City, the city has decided to install 1,500 new crosswalk countdown clocks and lower speed limits in order to increase safety for pedestrians at some of the city’s most dangerous intersections. The Transportation Department’s efforts are expected to reach over 60 miles of the city. 20 of the most dangerous miles will receive new medians for pedestrians to stop at when crossing the road.
One of the most common factors in the accidents studied, was speed. The DOT will also be reducing speed limits from 30 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour at dangerous intersections. Furthermore, they hope to expand the number of school zones across the city to 175 by the end of the year.
